Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tighten the underlying muscles for a smoother, more toned appearance. While abdominoplasty can produce dramatic improvements in the contours of the abdomen, it’s important for patients to understand that scarring is an inevitable part of the surgical process. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, I often discuss the topic of abdominoplasty scars with my
patients. In this blog post, I’ll provide valuable insights into what patients can expect in terms of scarring following abdominoplasty and offer tips for minimizing and managing scars for optimal results.
The type and extent of scarring following abdominoplasty will vary depending on the specific technique used and the individual patient’s anatomy. However, there are typically two main types of scars associated with abdominoplasty:
1. Horizontal Scar: The horizontal scar is located low on the abdomen, typically within the bikini or underwear line. This scar is necessary for removing excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen and is designed to be well-hidden beneath clothing.
2. Umbilical Scar: The umbilical scar is a small, circular scar that is created around the belly button (umbilicus) during the repositioning process. This scar is typically inconspicuous and fades over time, blending seamlessly with the surrounding skin.
After abdominoplasty surgery, patients can expect their scars to go through a natural healing process. Initially, scars may appear red, raised, and slightly swollen, which is a normal part of the body’s healing response. Over time, scars typically fade and flatten as the healing process progresses.
While scars will never completely disappear, they often become less noticeable over time and can be easily concealed beneath clothing and swimwear. The final appearance of scars can vary from patient to patient and may be influenced by factors such as genetics, skin type, and proper scar management.
While it’s not possible to completely eliminate scars, there are several strategies that patients can use to minimize and manage abdominoplasty scars for optimal results:
1. Follow Postoperative Instructions: It’s essential to follow your plastic surgeon’s postoperative instructions carefully to promote proper healing and minimize the risk of complications. This may include keeping the incision sites clean and dry, avoiding strenuous activities, and wearing compression garments as recommended. Minimizing swelling and pressure on the incisions significantly improves the final postoperative scar result.
2. Use Scar Management Products: There are various over-the-counter scar management products available, such as silicone sheets, gels, and creams, that can help improve the appearance of scars. These products work by hydrating the skin and creating a protective barrier that promotes optimal healing. Ask your board certified plastic surgeon prior to beginning usage or any of these products.
3. Protect Your Skin from the Sun: Exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can cause scars to darken and become more noticeable. To prevent this, it’s important to protect your skin from the sun by wearing
sunscreen with a high SPF and avoiding prolonged sun exposure, especially during the early stages of scar healing.
4. Massage the Scar Tissue: Gently massaging the scar tissue with your fingertips can help improve blood circulation, break up scar tissue, and promote a smoother, more pliable scar. Your plastic surgeon can provide specific instructions on how to perform scar massage safely and effectively. Vibration and massage, along with silicone, have been the two reliable ways a patient can reduce the visibility of scars.
5. Be Patient and Persistent: Scar healing is a gradual process that takes time and patience. While scars may initially appear prominent, they often improve significantly with time and proper care. It’s important to be patient and persistent in your scar management efforts, as consistent care can lead to more favorable outcomes.
While scarring is an inevitable part of abdominoplasty surgery, patients can take steps to minimize and manage scars for optimal results. By understanding the types of scars associated with abdominoplasty, following postoperative instructions, using scar management products, protecting the skin from the sun, and being patient and persistent in scar management efforts, patients can achieve smoother, more inconspicuous scars and enjoy the full benefits of their abdominoplasty results. If you’re considering
abdominoplasty surgery, I encourage you to schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals, concerns, and treatment options. With proper care and guidance from a qualified plastic surgeon, you can achieve beautiful, natural-looking results and feel more confident in your appearance.
