It is important to discuss the location of the incision (ie. In the breast fold), location of the implant (ie. Above or below the muscle), type of implant (ie. Silicone gel or saline), and whether a lift would be needed.

What important questions should I consider during a breast augmentation consultation?

In general, it is anticipated that women can breast feed following a breast reduction, breast lift, or breast augmentation. Studies have also shown that mammograms and routine breast cancer screening is not affected by previous breast surgery or implant placement. Similarly, a majority of women experience normal sensation following their breast surgery, while a small number of patients may experience increased or decreased sensation.

What happens to breast-feeding and nipple sensation after breast surgery?

Breast augmentation is a relatively short surgery (1-1.5 hours) and most patients can socially interact (ie go out for dinner, etc) within 2-3 days. Patients are recommended to sleep on their backs for 6 weeks, to wear a post-surgical bra for 6 weeks, and to refrain from lifting over 10 lbs for 6 weeks. At 6 weeks, patients can resume normal activities.

Tummy tuck surgery is roughly 2-3 hour surgery with a 6 week recovery. Patients with seated jobs, such as office work, can return to work within 5-7 days, though most patients set aside 10-14 days for recovery at home. In general, patients sleep on their back in semi-upright, beach chair style position for the first 2-3 weeks. Patients can walk, go up and down stairs on day 1 after surgery. Lifting is limited to 5 pounds for 1 week and 10-12 pounds for 6 weeks. At 6 weeks, patients can resume normal activities. Patients are given an abdominal binder the day of surgery and are recommended to purchase compression garments to wear for 2-3 months to help reduce swelling, pain, and scarring. Lymphatic massage is an optional post-op treatment
that can help reduce swelling following this surgery.

How long is a recovery for a breast augmentation or tummy tuck?

Patience is key! It is normal and expected to see swelling for several months following plastic surgery. Although the results will be quick to see after surgery, the finished product may not be seen for 8-12 months after surgery. The body needs to heal (3 months), and then remodel and replace early scar tissue with more normal tissue (3 month-1 year). Wearing compression garments, following postop instructions, and trusting the process is essential!

When can I expect to see the final results of my surgery?

Dr. Fuller tries to limit and eliminate the need for narcotic pain medication following surgery. To do this, Dr. Fuller places local numbing medicine along incisions and surgical sites at the start of the case. In addition, Dr. Fuller utilizes a long-acting numbing medicine called “Exparel” into the muscle tightening component of tummy tucks which drastically reduces the pain experienced following this procedure. Dr. Fuller also suggests arnica supplments to help reduce bruising and swelling after surgery. Together, the goal would be on over the counter pain medications, such as Tylenol and Ibuprofen, within 2-3 days following common plastic surgery procedures. Each individual recovery of course is variable.

What pain is expected after surgery?

Plastic Surgery pricing is determined by length of surgery, cost of implants/materials, complexity of the procedure, facility fees, and anesthesia fees. We provide patient-specific pricing following consultation with Dr. Fuller. Range of pricing (including all of the above fees) for common procedures include breast augmentation $6-7,000, breast augmentation with lift ($8500-10,500), tummy tuck $9-11,000, mommy makeover (breast lift/reduction/augmentation and tummy tuck $14,500-17,500). Pricing can vary based on the amount of liposuction to be performed and length of incision (mini tummy tuck versus extended tummy tuck) which affects length of surgery, anesthesia, materials used, etc.
